About The Benue
Home-Cooked Nigerian Heritage — Served Daily in Toronto
At The Benue, we believe food is more than nourishment. it’s a connection to culture, community, and comfort. Our name is inspired by Benue State, Nigeria’s food basket, and every dish we serve carries the rich culinary traditions of our homeland.
Humble Beginnings
Company History
Since 2015, the Nigerian population in Toronto, particularly in the midtown and downtown areas, has grown exponentially. On social media and in person, I heard from many of them about the struggles of finding Nigerian food and groceries in the city. Without a car, they would have to commute by transit to North York for Nigerian Food. This struggle was worsened during the COVID19 pandemic due to various lockdown restrictions. The pandemic, however, presented an unexpected opportunity – with commercial rents dropping and a general shift to takeout and delivery, an idea that had been brewing for years was able to materialize. Thus, in November 2020, The Benue was born. As of November 2020, there was only one Nigerian restaurant in the downtown area of Toronto. I had tried their food and believed I could deliver a more authentic experience and believe we have succeeded in that regard. We are the busiest Nigerian restaurant in the city and continue to grow.

Our vision at The Benue is to be the Canada’s premiere destination for authentic Nigerian cuisine. In 5 years, we aspire to expand our reach, by establishing multiple locations in Toronto and beyond. We also aim to produce our own line of sauces, seasonings, and frozen meals to be sold at major grocery stores.

We are committed to honoring our culinary roots while introducing Nigerian cuisine to a wider audience.
